It Does Not Support Schema Extensions – The Azure side of Azure AD Domain Services does NOT support schema extensions, so if you plan to setup any server that requires schema extensions (like SharePoint, Exchange, Cisco,CallManager Citrix, etc), those won’t work in this Azure AD Domain Services side of things. No Namespace, No AD Extension of Services – The big impact to this lack of namespace extension means that EVERYTHING you do on-prem in Active Directory does NOT simply extend to this Azure space. So Azure’s side of the thing requires a whole separate (non-continuous) DNS branch, doesn’t extend your Enterprise and Domain Admin credentials over, doesn’t extend your Group Policies across, etc, etc. Basically everything that you’ve setup in AD doesn’t flow over to this Azure AD Domain Services side of things. It is NOT an Extension of your AD Namespace – Azure AD Domain Services does NOT extend your on-premise Active Directory namespace to Azure, so if your AD onprem is, your Azure AD Domain Services namespace CANNOT be, and in fact it can’t even be a subdomain of your onprem (like ). NO, the Azure AD DS namespace has to be something completely different, could be something like or something weird like that, but it has to be different. So the issue with Azure AD Domain Services is: What’s Wrong with Azure AD Domain Services You’d think Microsoft would extend your on-premise Active Directory up in Azure, so rather than hosting a virtual machine in Azure as a Global Catalog / Domain Controller in Microsoft’s cloud, that Microsoft would provide an extension of your on-premise AD to their cloud as a service. But NO, that is NOT what Azure AD Domain Services provides.

What You’d Think Azure AD Domain Services Is I’ve had a couple orgs ask me about Microsoft’s Azure Active Directory Domain Services this past week, figured it would be good to get an article out on it… So for orgs that have been using Microsoft’s Active Directory on-premise for years, Azure AD Domain Services is NOT an simple extension of your Active Directory, and in fact, of the hundreds of orgs we’ve implemented Active Directory for over the years, we have NOT onboarded “any” of them to Azure AD Domain Services.
